Tumescent Liposuction

Who Is A Good Candidate?

Ideal candidates are healthy individuals who have localized areas of fat accumulation which are resistant to diet and exercise. While lipoplasty is not a treatment for obesity (you won't lose significant weight); it can be used to address selected areas to help incentivise weight reduction by improving self image.

How Is It Performed?

Before starting, markings are made with a pen to define the areas to be suctioned. The tumescent procedure is then initiated by injecting large volumes of a dilute anesthetic solution directly into the areas of the fatty deposits which shrinks blood vessels and minimizes blood loss.

After a small incision is made in the skin, a narrow tube, called a cannula, which is connected to a vacuum machine, is inserted under the skin in the area to be treated. Using back and forth movements, the fat is suctioned into the tubing in a sterile collection system. When the liposuction procedure is complete, an elastic compression garment is worn to help the skin contract and heal. The result is a sculpting of bulging areas laden with fat into more attractive contours.

What are the complications for this procedure?

A recent study involving over 20,000 patients, who had tumescent liposuction, reveals no serious complications, no serious infections, no hospitalizations, no blood transfusions, and no deaths. The greatest risks of liposuction are those associated with general anesthesia. By eliminating general anesthesia, the risks of liposuction are dramatically reduced.

What Types Of Physicians Perform Cosmetic Surgery?

To begin with it is important to distinguish plastic (reconstructive) surgery from cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgeons are trained to reconstruct distortions of the body due to injury, disease or birth defects.

Cosmetic surgery attempts to alter the appearance of parts of the body electively to make them more appealing in the eyes of the patient. As such any surgically trained individual who takes appropriate specialized training in cosmetic surgical techniques can qualify. Thus cosmetic surgery is performed by dermatologists, gynecologists, maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, etc.
