Current Appointments 

  1. Head of the Angio and Interventional Services, Department of Medical Imaging, the Canberra Hospital.
  2. Senior Staff Specialist (Interventional and Diagnostic Radiologist"),  at The Canberra Hospital (from 18th May 1998). 

The work at The Canberra Hospital, involves 2and half days of Interventional radiology, one day in MRI, one day in CT and rest of the times in ultrasound and reporting of plain x-rays and available all the time for any back up for interventions on rest of the days and after hours in addition to the general radiology.

I do both vascular and non-vascular interventional work at the Canberra hospital.  The vascular work includes both Diagnostic angiography (all forms of arterial access (ABF – Aorto-Bi femoral angiography, Mesenteric angio, Subclavian angio Cerebral Angiography ETC) and Venous access) and various vascular interventions. 

The vascular interventions I do include peripheral PTAs, stent (both covered and uncovered) placements, Endovascular treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAAs), thrombolysis, embolectomies, renal PTAs, Subclavian PTAs, stent and graft placements, IVC filter placements, Dialysis loop clearances, Transjugular Intrahepatic Porto Systemic shunts (TIPSS), Vertebroplasty, embolisation of Varicoceles, ovarian vein embolisation, Fibroid embolisations, embolisation of GIT haemorrhages, preoperative and palliative embolisation of tumours (including TACE- trans arterial chemo embolisations).

The non-vascular interventions include work on renal tract (PCN, ureteric stents, extraction of stones), radio frequency ablations of tumours, biliary work (PTC, biliary drainage, removal of stones), biopsies, abscess drainage etc.

 

Procedures introduced at The Canberra Hospital:  I have introduced the Uterine Artery Embolisation for the treatment of Uterine Fibroids and Vertebroplasty for the treatment of spinal fractures at the Canberra Hospital. 

NB:  Between May 1998 and now I have performed approximately 6000 procedures of which 4500 procedures related to Vascular and non vascular interventions.

Teaching Profile 

I enjoy teaching.  I have been involved with teaching at various levels. 

Radiology Registrars
:  Currently I teach both interventional and non-interventional areas of radiology to seven trainee registrars in Radiology.

Advanced training / Fellowship in Radiology
:  I am responsible for the introduction of advanced training / fellowship position in interventional radiology at the Canberra Hospital since 2001 (the College of Radiology has approved an accredited advanced training position in Interventional Radiology under the supervision of Dr. Robert Allen and myself).  We have trained four interventional fellows, Dr. Ruben Krishnananthan, Dr. Barnbas Bako, Dr. Suresh DeSilva and and Dr. Ma’moon Hasan Al-Omari.

I am actively involved in training of advanced trainee / fellow in Musculoskeletal imaging.

I supervised and taught, the interventional section of the Master of Medicine (Imaging) - Masters Degree for Radiologists who have passed full RANZCR part II, developed by Dr. Morry Silberstein at the University of Sydney.  The following Doctors were graduated in 2004 – Dr. M. Despoi, Dr. M. Guduguntla, Dr. A. Lee, Dr. M. Nawaz, Dr. P. Robertson, Dr. I. Tsou, Dr. V. Vorbyov.

Clinical Registrars:  Actively involved in teaching of clinical registrars including algorithmic approaches to individual clinical problems at the Hospital. 

Medical Students: Actively involved in teaching of UMP and GMP medical students at Canberra Clinical School as part medical program organised by University of Sydney.  I am committed to teaching of Medical students of Australian National University.

Paramedical staff: I give regular in service teaching sessions to nurses and radiographers in the department.   

Medical Community: Time to time I also organise presentations on procedures to relevant specialist and General Practitioners.  For example I gave presentations on Uterine fibroid Embolisations and Vertebroplasty.  

When I was working in various Hospitals in Queensland I was actively involved with teaching radiology and clinical registrars, residents, paramedical staff and Overseas Doctors preparing for Australian Medical Council exams.
