Robert L. Worthington-Kirsch, M.D., FSIR, FASA, RVT, RPVI is an Interventional Radiologist.  His medical practice is in Pottstown, PA (Phone: 610-327-7236).

As of May 2008,  Dr. Worthington-Kirsch has performed almost 2,500 Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) procedures.  This is the greatest experience with UAE in the world.  In addition to UAE he also performs evaluations and treatment for some causes of pelvic pain and provides “general” interventional services at Roxborough Memorial Hospital.

He has Bachelors Degrees in Molecular Biology and Humanities from MIT. He received his M.D. from the university of Massachusetts Medical School.  He performed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at   Mercy Catholic Medical Center of Southeastern Pennsylvania before beginning practice in Interventional Radiology.

Dr. Worthington-Kirsch, a Subspecialty Board-Certified Interventional Radiologist, has been in practice in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area since 1990.  He is Assistant Professor of Radiology – Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

He regularly performs both vascular and non-vascular procedures for the management of a wide variety of medical conditions.  Much of his previous career as an Interventional Radiologist has been devoted to treating people with untreatable diseases such as advanced cancers, severe cirrhosis of the liver, and severe   peripheral vascular disease.  His particular areas of   interest include Gynecological Interventional Radiology, Biliary Interventional Radiology, and Venous Access.

Dr. Worthington-Kirsch and Dr. Francis Hutchins, Jr., a Gynecologist, were the second team in the United States to begin performing Uterine Artery Embolization treatment for fibroids in the second half of 1996.  Dr. Worthington-Kirsch and Dr. Hutchins published the  largest case  series of 53 UAE patients in the English medical literature – "Uterine Arterial Embolization For The Management of Leiomyomas:  Quality-of-life Assessment and Clinical Response", Radiology 1998.

Dr. Worthington-Kirsch, Dr. Hutchins, and Dr. R.P. Berkowitz, also a Gynecologist, published a larger case series report of 305 consecutive UAE cases – "Selective Uterine Artery Embolization as Primary Treatment For Symptomatic Leiomyomata Uteri", J Am Assoc Gynecol Laparos 1999.

He traveled to Cold Cabo, RJ, in 1998, to incorporate the newest technique for treating uterine fibroids.  Subsequently, Dr. Fernando Sant’Anna and Dr. Paulo Barrozo, from Cold Cabo, RJ, traveled to the United States in June of 1999 to Roxborough Memorial Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to learn the technique of embolization.

He performed the UAE procedure on a 43-year-old patient in front of 300 specialists at Santa Catarina Hospital, Sao Paulo, Brazil, in August of 2001.

Dr. Worthington-Kirsch continues to travel extensively throughout the United States as well as the world (Canada, France, England, Brazil, and Sweden, Uruguay) giving lectures and training UAE to gynecology and radiology physicians.

Dr. Worthington-Kirsch is involved in both independent and industry-sponsored research studies about UAE.

For the Phase II pivotal trial, Dr. Worthington-Kirsch was one of the clinical investigators involved in evaluating the use of BioSphere Embosphere®Microspheres to treat uterine fibroids (the first patient was treated December 14, 2000).  The study was designed to measure the safety and compare symptoms of disease in 100 treated patients before and after treatment and also to compare these results with a separate group of patients who have been treated with hysterectomy.  This study is the first time in the United States that the results of this procedure were evaluated using a validated measurement system and also the first time UAE was systematically compared with the standard surgical alternative, hysterectomy.  Patients treated in both arms of the Phase II study were followed for at least a year to compare the long-term results in each group.

The Phase I study involved 30 patients with symptomatic leiomyomata.  Research was performed on one of the Embolic Materials that is used in the UAE procedure - "Tris-Acryl gelatin microspheres (Embospheres)", JVIR and Entrez-PubMed September 12, 2001.

Multicenter clinical study evaluating uterine artery embolization as an alternative to abdominal and laparoscopic myomectomy procedures for uterine fibroids  (started in 2003).

The Multicenter Study was completed in 2004 - "Outcome of Uterine Embolization & Hysterectomy For Leiomyomas:  Results of a Multicenter Study" American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (2004) 191, 22-31.

April 17, 2004, Dr. Kirsch attended seminars on UAE in Brazil (Rio), Argentina (Buenos Aires), and Uruguay (Montevideo).  He performed the first 2 UAEs for fibroids ever done in Uruguay.

As of October 2004, he is the Fellow of the American Society of Angiology (FASA).
