FAQS:  What do Ovarian Cysts and Uterine Fibroids look like?

The following photos are actual Ovarian Cysts and Uterine Fibroids photos taken during surgery.

Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian Cysts are filled with fluid, similar to a blister.  They are located on/in the Ovary, which is an organ that produces a follicle (egg) every month for the ovulation and menstrual cycles.  The two (2) Ovaries are located on the left and the right side of the Uterus.  (Photos used with permission of William Parker, M.D.)

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus.  They are not cancers,  but can cause symptoms such as excessive bleeding during or between periods, pressure on the bladder or rectum, discomfort during sexual relations or interference with fertility.  Symptoms from fibroids, the most common of which is excessive bleeding, can be anywhere from mild to disabling.  (Photos used with permission of Francis L. Hutchins, Jr., M.D.)
