Ovarian Cancer Information

Dr. William Parker is a Gynecologist in Santa Monica, CA.  His website  www.ovaryresearch.com is filled with ovary research information.

William Parker, M.D. is a Gynecologist in Santa Monica, CA."In the CA-125 arm of the study, women had a screening blood test. If the test was abnormal, they were placed into a high/intermediate/low risk categories based on their age and how abnormal the blood test was.  Women in the intermediate category had the test repeated 3 months later and then if they were still intermediate, it was repeated 3 months later. If the level of CA-125 was rising, they then had an ultrasound. If that was abnormal, they had a pelvic exam. If all the results were worrisome, then they had surgery.

I am afraid the public (and doctors who are not paying attention to the details) will do one CA-125 test and if it is abnormal, send the patients for ultrasounds, and if there is any question about the ultrasound, they will end up with surgery that most of them will not need.  What the Med News story doesn't say is that 24 women had major complications from surgery.

The other issue is that it is not yet clear whether this strategy decreases mortality from ovarian cancer.  In the year following the testing, 4 women developed ovarian cancer undetected by the testing they had less than a year before." - Dr. Parker

Promising Advances In Screening Tests For Ovarian Cancer Early Detection

The preliminary results of the most extensive randomised trial of ovarian cancer screening so far, are published Online First and in the April edition of The Lancet Oncology. The findings indicate that detecting early stage ovarian cancer is possible with the CA125 blood test and transvaginal ultrasound, with almost half of the cancers in stage I/II.
